The HYDMECH H-22A can add useful structural-steel capacity when a shop has repeatable 90-degree cuts within its actual 22-inch workpiece envelope and can support, move, and clear heavy material at the saw.
That makes the automatic horizontal dual-post band saw relevant to Wisconsin and Upper Midwest metal-fabrication buyers preparing tubing, channels, angles, rounds, squares, and bar for frames, bases, weldments, brackets, and other fabricated assemblies. Wisconsin’s economic-development profile reports more than 470,000 manufacturing jobs and more than 8,900 manufacturing companies in the Lightcast 2025 Q4 dataset. Wisconsin DNR guidance also lists fabricated structural metal manufacturing and fabricated plate work among its metal-fabrication source categories. The machine is not a universal structural-processing replacement; its value is concentrated in heavy, repeatable straight cutting.
Where the H-22A fits
The H-22A provides 22-inch by 22-inch 90-degree rectangular capacity and 22-inch round capacity. Its 10 HP VFD direct-drive blade system runs from 40 to 300 surface feet per minute, while the dual-post welded frame is intended to maintain cutting stability under heavy production loads. The direct-drive arrangement removes belts and pulleys from the blade-drive train, although blade, coolant, hydraulic, chip-removal, and general machine maintenance still remain part of ownership.
The machine fits recurring cut-to-length work in structural tubing, channels, angles, rounds, squares, and heavy bar. It also fits preparation for fabricated assemblies in which cut stock moves to welding, coping, drilling, deburring, or fit-up. The important qualifier is the 90-degree cutting pattern: a shop whose work is mostly straight cutting can use the H-22A as a capacity upgrade, while a shop that depends on frequent miters still needs a separate angled-cutting solution.
The optional 6-degree canted head is a material-mix decision rather than an automatic upgrade. It is intended to improve blade penetration in solid material, but it changes the available envelope and reduces maximum round capacity to 20 inches. Buyers should compare that tradeoff with actual solid-stock dimensions before including the option.
How AutoSet changes repeated saw work
AutoSet is standard on the current H-22A product configuration. Operators enter the material profile, material width and type, and whether the cut is a single piece or a bundle. The control then sets blade speed, feed pressure, and downfeed rate and recommends tooth pitch. That creates a repeatable starting point for different material profiles and reduces the amount of manual setup calculation between operators.
The control stores up to 999 jobs and supports a 10-job active queue. The servo-controlled shuttle indexes material from 0 to 34 inches in a single stroke and applies automatic kerf compensation. Those functions matter most when similar cut lists repeat across a shift or several shifts because they reduce repeated manual indexing and job re-entry.
AutoSet does not replace correct material identification, blade selection, operator training, or validation against the shop’s actual grades and sections. The machine can make setup more consistent, but the cut program still has to reflect the real workpiece and bundle conditions.
Handling decides whether saw capacity becomes plant capacity
Hydraulic full-stroke vises, flood coolant, an automatic chip-removal auger, safety door interlocks, diagnostics, and accessible maintenance features support production sawing. The H-22A can also be configured with hydraulic overhead bundling, a remote console, roller discharge tables, idler or powered conveyors, vertical alignment rollers, and other material-handling arrangements.
Those options should be evaluated as a material-flow system rather than as isolated accessories. Long structural stock needs support before the cut, during indexing, and after discharge. Cranes, forklifts, roller tables, conveyors, staging space, and operators can become the practical constraint if they cannot supply and clear the saw at the required pace. Industrial saw-system layouts likewise show that staging, transfers, conveyor length, and bay configuration affect how much value a saw can deliver.
Bundle cutting can improve the fit when compatible bars or tubes repeat in production quantities. The optional overhead bundling system still has to match the bundle shape, section geometry, clamping condition, and lifting method. A bundle option does not establish that every mixed structural load can be clamped safely or cut consistently.
Where the machine stops
The H-22A is a horizontal straight-cut saw. It does not replace a dedicated mitering saw, beam coping machine, beam drilling line, or complete long-bar processing system. It can prepare material for those operations, but it does not perform them. A capacity review should separate the share of work that is 90-degree sawing from the share requiring miters, coping, drilling, or other structural operations.
The nominal envelope also needs to be tested against actual rectangles, rounds, tubes, channels, angles, wall thicknesses, and bundle dimensions. A maximum nominal section may behave differently from smaller stock, and cutting rates and blade life will vary with material grade, geometry, tooth pitch, coolant, feed settings, and operator practice. No general throughput increase or labor-saving result should be assumed without representative sample cuts and a shop-specific time study.
Use it as a phased replacement
A legacy-saw replacement does not require rebuilding every surrounding process at the same time. The H-22A can be evaluated as one modernization step, with later conveyor, discharge, remnant-handling, coping, drilling, or welding upgrades defined separately. The first installation still needs enough support to operate safely and consistently.
The proposed location should accommodate the listed 12,500-pound machine weight, 480V standard electrical service, rigging access, floor and maintenance clearances, coolant management, chip removal, and blade storage. The replacement plan should also explain how existing saw capacity remains available during installation, commissioning, and operator training. The quotation should define the included handling equipment, commissioning scope, training, wear-item support, and regional service arrangements.
Safety remains part of the modernization decision. OSHA guidance emphasizes guarding the blade and wheels, maintaining suitable blade tension, using the correct blade, and keeping guards properly adjusted. Automation does not remove the need for guarding review, lockout procedures, blade-change controls, coolant housekeeping, and operator training.
Start with the actual cut history
The best application review begins with the past 12 months of saw work: section size, material grade, length, quantity, angle, bundle frequency, shift pattern, and time spent loading, indexing, unloading, and handling remnants. Compare that record with the 22-inch cutting envelope, the 34-inch shuttle stroke, the expected job queue, and the support available around the proposed saw location.
The review should also map the machine to cranes, forklifts, roller tables, conveyors, staging, downstream coping, drilling, welding, fit-up, deburring, painting, and shipping. Representative sample cuts should establish square, length repeatability, burr condition, blade and coolant practices, and bundle performance before approval. That process shows whether the H-22A removes a genuine straight-cut constraint or simply moves the bottleneck to handling or downstream fabrication.
