Overview
For cylinder work, the right Akyapak ASM-S is the one that proves it can form your parts and whose initial-pinch handling sequence suits your production pattern. Assess a used candidate with a powered demonstration using representative material, width, and geometry.
- Match material grade and strength, thickness, working width, smallest target diameter, and acceptable straight-end length. Verify the actual configuration; a cone-bending device or cylinder rating does not establish capacity for your cone geometry.
- Pre-bending both ends can require handling and reversing the plate. For frequent two-edge preparation, compare a four-roll double-pinch design, which can handle both pre-bends without removing and turning the plate. A new initial-pinch roll still requires repositioning.
- Check the used roll’s condition, service records, and availability of parts or qualified support. Buying new may be easier to justify if required work cannot be demonstrated, condition or supportability remains uncertain, or repairs undermine the savings.
- Before production, review in-running nip-point hazards, point-of-operation guarding, control-station location, emergency stops, operating procedures, and operator training. A separate control panel alone does not establish adequate safeguarding.
An Akyapak ASM-S initial-pinch plate roll can form cylinders and curved parts when the specific machine’s capacity and edge-preparation sequence fit the work. For a used candidate, a representative forming test—not age or appearance alone—is the clearest way to assess whether it suits the shop.
What the ASM-S initial-pinch roll does
A three-roll plate roll curves flat sheet or plate into cylindrical and other curved forms; cone work depends on the machine’s configuration and tooling. The ASM-S product-family description specifies an asymmetric working principle. Its listed configuration includes induction-hardened rolls, a motorized back roll, a handwheel-adjusted lower roll, a movable control panel, and a cone-bending device. Verify the actual machine’s options and condition rather than assuming that a family-level description confirms what is installed.
This process can add in-house capacity for cylinder work without making the shop commit to a more complex roll configuration. Its fit depends on the parts: a cone attachment does not establish that a machine can form every cone, and a cylinder rating does not by itself establish cone capacity.
Account for the edge-preparation sequence
Initial-pinch rolling clamps the plate between two rolls while the third roll forms the bend. Pre-bending both ends can involve handling and reversing the plate between edge operations; the Akyapak ASM operator manual describes that sequence. Check the manual for the exact machine being considered and demonstrate the work sequence on a representative part.
A four-roll double-pinch design can handle both edge pre-bends without removing and turning the plate, reducing a handling step. That difference matters most when two-edge preparation is frequent or repeat production makes operator time and material movement consequential. For occasional cylinder jobs, the initial-pinch sequence may be manageable; compare it against the shop’s actual production pattern rather than treating either layout as universally better.
Match the roll to the parts
Start with material grade and strength, thickness, working width, smallest target diameter, and acceptable straight-end length. Include cone geometry where relevant. These factors affect whether a roll can form the required shape; a nominal thickness figure alone is not enough to establish fit.
Do not transfer a rating from a different Akyapak family or assume one demonstration proves every capacity. Review the candidate’s identification plate, machine-specific documentation, and configuration, then ask for a powered demonstration using representative material, width, and geometry. Check the resulting shape, edge preparation, and repeatability against the part requirement.
Decide whether a used roll earns its place
A used machine can make sense when its capacity and forming sequence fit the work and its condition is demonstrated. Review the roll surfaces, alignment, journals and bearings, frame, drive, roll adjustments, release mechanism, and controls. Check service records and the availability of parts or qualified support. Appearance or a test on a different material and diameter cannot settle those questions.
Buying new is easier to justify when the used candidate cannot demonstrate the required work, when its condition or supportability remains uncertain, or when repair or retrofit needs undermine the value of the lower acquisition cost. A new initial-pinch roll still will not remove the repositioning step if frequent two-edge pre-bending is the real production concern; compare a four-roll double-pinch process in that case.
Include safeguarding in the decision
Roll-bending machines present in-running nip-point hazards. Review the actual machine’s point-of-operation guarding, control-station location, emergency stops, operating procedures, and operator training before production. A separate control panel or a machine-family feature list does not establish that a particular machine and installation are adequately safeguarded.
