Overview
For recurring structural-profile work that combines length cutting, laser-cut connection features, coping, beveling and marking, the Ocean GLADIATOR merits a representative-part evaluation; laser-cut holes do not replace every mechanical drilling operation.
- The 4020, 5020 and 6020 list stock lengths of 40, 50 and 60 feet. Verify the selected configuration’s usable profile envelope and space for stock, transfers and finished-part handling.
- Confirm laser-cut holes meet each job’s requirements; tapping, countersinking, counterboring, milling or other mechanical work may still be needed.
- Test representative parts and Tekla NC1 files, and compare whole-job time, including programming, loading, unloading and downstream work. Cost, throughput and floor-space savings are not established for a particular shop.
The Ocean GLADIATOR is worth evaluating when recurring structural-profile work combines length cutting, laser-cut connection features, coping, beveling, and marking—but its laser-cut holes do not make it a universal substitute for mechanical drilling.
A timely development in beam processing
Ocean Machinery’s GLADIATOR development was reported on August 11, 2026. FABTECH’s October 21 program also listed a structural beam-laser presentation by Ocean Machinery speaker Danny Steyn. These dated items bring an integrated beam-laser option into current industry discussion; they do not establish shop-level production savings or independently measured results.
What the GLADIATOR combines
The five-axis fiber-laser line is designed for structural profiles, including beams, columns, channels, and angles. It combines cut-to-length work with laser-cut holes and connection features, coping, beveling, and part marking. When a recurring part needs several of those features, the combined route may reduce transfers among separate operations. The benefit depends on the complete job, including any work that remains outside the laser process.
A useful trial part could be a skid or platform cross-member requiring a cope flush to the inside of a flange. Check the cope and fit on representative material and drawings rather than assuming that a described feature guarantees the required downstream weld fit-up.
Check the profile, hole, and workflow fit
The 4020, 5020, and 6020 configurations correspond to listed stock lengths of 40, 50, and 60 feet. Confirm the usable profile envelope for the selected configuration against actual beam, channel, and angle dimensions. Account for the long stock in the floor plan as well: infeed and outfeed, raw-stock staging, transfers, finished-part handling, aisle access, and service clearance all matter.
The listed connection-hole feature is laser-cut. Confirm that this process meets each job’s hole requirements, and identify parts that still need mechanical drilling, tapping, countersinking, counterboring, or milling. Those requirements can leave secondary work in the route or call for other equipment.
The GLADIATOR’s software lists bulk Tekla NC1 import and a profile-cutting macro library. Test representative files, revisions, and detailing steps before treating that capability as a fit with the shop’s workflow. Evaluate whole-job time, including programming, loading, unloading, and downstream work—not only cutting time. A representative material run can also help check edge condition, feature geometry, cope fit, and finishing needs.
Keep listed functions separate from proven results
The documented operations and configurations give buyers a basis for application trials, but not an independent production comparison. Treat claims about cost, throughput, or floor-space savings as unverified for a particular shop until a configuration-specific layout and representative-part demonstration support the decision.
I’m Dave Graf, a Regional Sales Executive covering Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, California, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon. I can help assess your structural part mix, handling, layout, and process requirements against structural-processing options Mac-Tech supports. Bring representative beam drawings or Tekla NC1 files, material sizes and grades, hole and cope requirements, current process steps, expected volume, and a floor plan. The Ocean GLADIATOR is not identified as a Mac-Tech offering, so I can help frame the application comparison without implying Mac-Tech sells or services it.
