What the Omaha expansion changes
On September 9, 2026, Coated Metals Group opened its 14th U.S. facility in the Omaha area. The facility is intended to stock prefinished coil and sheet, roofing accessories, and related architectural-metal products closer to contractors, manufacturers, distributors, and other building professionals while reducing freight and lead-time friction.
The development changes the material-flow question more than it changes the machine answer. Closer access to stocked material can justify a fresh comparison between buying cut blanks and preparing more blanks in-house, but it does not prove that a shop needs a shear or that hydraulic shearing will outperform another process. The deciding evidence remains the shop’s actual material mix, cut list, handling method, and downstream bottleneck.
Where the HOCHSTRATE shear fits
The HOCHSTRATE HYDRAULIC PLATE SHEAR uses a fully hydraulic guillotine-shearing process to separate flat sheet or plate along a straight line. - High-mix jobbing: A configurable shear is more adaptable to changing cut lengths, material thicknesses, widths, and batch sizes than equipment dedicated to one continuous profile.
Strengths that matter on prefinished material
Guillotine shearing makes a straight mechanical cut without heat input and is commonly used to size blanks before bending, punching, or welding. That makes the process useful when a shop needs a direct blanking step rather than a contour-cutting or thermal-cutting operation.
The HOCHSTRATE’s hydraulic drive, backgauge, hold-downs, blade adjustment, and support equipment address different operating problems. The backgauge helps position repeat cuts, the hold-downs stabilize the sheet near the cut, and blade settings must follow the material and thickness. Surface-support choices also matter when a scratch or pressure mark becomes a finished-part defect. Ball-caster or coated support surfaces, careful part removal, and controlled stacking should be evaluated with the actual prefinished material.
The machine’s flexibility is valuable only when the shop uses it. A backgauge, touchscreen, support system, conveyor, stacking option, or additional safety feature can improve control and handling, but the buyer should verify which features are present on the selected machine rather than assuming that every family option is included.
When coil equipment is the better route
A hydraulic shear handles batch blanking from flat material. It does not perform the same job as a continuous coil-conversion line.
Choose cut-to-length for recurring sheet output
A cut-to-length route is the better fit when the shop regularly receives coil and needs a repeatable stream of sheets at programmed lengths. Decoiling, straightening, cutoff, conveying, and stacking become central to the process, while the flexibility to position individual sheets for many unrelated blank sizes becomes less important.
Choose slitting for narrow-strip demand
Slitting is the better fit when the main requirement is converting wider coil into narrower strip on a continuous basis. A shear can produce strips from flat stock, but it does not provide the same coil-fed conversion sequence.
Choose roll forming for continuous profiles
Roll forming is the better fit when the order mix is dominated by long, repeatable profiles or panels. Metal-roofing production commonly separates accessory preparation from the main panel route: a shear or slitter can prepare narrower trim strips, while the remaining coil proceeds through a roll-forming machine for continuous panels.
The HOCHSTRATE shear can still support a roll-forming operation by preparing accessories or other flat blanks, but it should not be positioned as a replacement for the primary coil-fed profile line.
The cut list should drive the purchase
The first useful comparison is the percentage of work that begins as flat sheet or plate rather than coil feeding a continuous line. Review representative weekly and monthly cut lists, batch sizes, changeover frequency, maximum cut length, and the proportion of orders requiring straight blanks, narrow strips, notches, punches, formed profiles, or continuous lengths.
Material grades, coatings, thicknesses, widths, sheet or plate weight, edge requirements, squareness, and downstream tolerances should be evaluated together. Nominal thickness alone is not enough to establish machine fit. The exact machine configuration must be matched to material strength, cut geometry, blade settings, and usable width.
Prefinished surfaces add handling consequences. The evaluation should cover support arms, contact surfaces, hold-down behavior, operator access, part removal, stacking, and whether the machine can move the material without creating marks or uncontrolled sliding. The receiving folder, press brake, punch, weld fixture, or roll former should establish the blank dimensions and repeatability the shear must deliver.

The operating review should therefore cover the actual guards or light barriers, emergency stops, access control, material handling, operator training, blade-change procedures, inspection, and maintenance. The building also needs suitable electrical service, access paths, machine clearance, sheet or plate handling, and finished-part removal space. These considerations do not replace a site-specific safety or compliance review, but they can determine whether a proposed configuration is practical to operate.
