Overview
Judge a prepainted-steel slitting line by the edges and visible finish of the blanks after cutting and removal, not dimensional accuracy alone. The STEFA LCS2 prepares flat rectangular blanks through straightening, longitudinal rotary-knife slitting and mechanical transverse cutting; folding and profile roll forming remain separate operations.
- Use measured coated thickness, substrate grade and strength to review processing clearances and tooling. Confirm the intended slit pattern fits the installed knife arrangement, and define edge condition alongside dimensional tolerances.
- Confirm working width, straightener arrangement, knife capacity and speed for the quoted LCS2 build: published factory and Mac-Tech tables differ, and neither establishes a tested appearance result on your coating.
- Review visible-face contact surfaces and winding orientation. Choose temporary protective film with the coil coater and specify its application location. Lift sheets clear rather than dragging them; excessive stack pressure can also mark susceptible finishes.
- Compare incoming stock with blanks after slitting, cutoff and removal using the intended coating, slit pattern, blank lengths, film and retrieval method. Check width, length, edge condition and exposed-face appearance separately.
Prepainted steel blanks need acceptable cut edges and an intact visible face; accurate slit widths alone do not protect the finish. For rotary slitting and cut-to-length work, evaluate tooling, coated thickness, material-contact surfaces, protective film and blank removal against the actual appearance requirement.
The STEFA LCS2 combines straightening, longitudinal rotary-knife slitting and mechanical transverse cutting. It prepares flat rectangular blanks for subsequent fabrication; folding and profile roll forming remain separate operations.
Where combined width and length cutting fits
Architectural blanks for later folding and visible cover or enclosure blanks are applications to consider when they require both width conversion and defined lengths. Recurring width combinations warrant evaluating the coil route, while small batches or frequent finish changes should still be compared with purchased-sheet processing.
The LCS family includes software for automatic production, but the physical cutting pattern must fit the installed knife arrangement. Production controls do not establish that every proposed combination of blank widths can be cut from a particular master coil.
Separate slit-edge quality from painted-face quality
Rotary slitting quality depends on knife clearance, blade sharpness, machine condition and coil stresses. Burr, edge wave and surface knife marks are possible defects. Evaluate the slit edge and broad painted face separately rather than allowing a satisfactory width measurement to stand in for both.
Burrs can damage painted sheets during later manufacturing. Define the required edge condition alongside dimensional tolerances, especially where an edge remains exposed.
The LCS2 uses freely positioned rotary knives secured by screws and a vertically adjustable slitting shaft with millimeter indicators. Light-gauge slitting can require particularly precise knife tolerances. Discuss the intended gauge range, slit pattern, edge trim and edge-quality requirement against the proposed tooling and adjustment arrangement.
Match coated stock to the material-contact path
Coatings add to stock thickness. Use measured coated thickness—not bare-substrate gauge alone—when discussing processing clearances, while also providing substrate grade and strength.
The quoted LCS2 build should establish working width, straightener arrangement, knife capacity and speed for that material. These details need confirmation because the published factory and Mac-Tech tables differ. Neither table establishes a tested appearance result on the intended coating.
The contact path deserves as much attention as the knives. Establish which face remains visible, then review the surfaces that touch it for cleanliness, clearance and alignment. Winding orientation belongs in that discussion; do not assume every coil presents its painted face the same way.
The LCS family includes chrome-plated rolls and guarded mechanical shearing, with film applicators and input/output tables available as configuration choices. Those provisions are useful to evaluate for painted stock, not guarantees of unmarked output.
Choose protective film and blank removal together
Temporary protective film can reduce manufacturing damage, but the coil coater should help select the approach. Specify its application location so the intended portion of the material path receives protection.
Prepainted sheets should be lifted clear rather than dragged from a stack, which can scratch the sheet underneath. Excessive stack pressure can also mark susceptible finishes. A supported discharge arrangement does not solve finish damage if subsequent removal slides an edge across another painted sheet.
Steelscape’s cut-to-length processing offer restricts thickness for fluorocarbon paint systems because of top-surface scratching concerns during stacking. That is a supplier-specific processing restriction, not an LCS2 limit or a universal coating rule. It illustrates why output handling can change the usable material range independently of cutting capacity.
Make finished-blank quality the purchasing decision
A useful material evaluation compares incoming stock with blanks after slitting, cutoff and removal. Use the intended coating, slit pattern, blank lengths, film and retrieval method. Evaluate width, length, edge condition and exposed-face appearance separately; dimensional success should not conceal an appearance failure.
The longest recurring blank and planned removal method should guide discharge support. Actual coil dimensions, weight and winding orientation should inform the entry package. These application details make the equipment comparison more useful than a headline thickness rating alone.
I’m Patrick O’Neill, Mac-Tech’s National Product Manager / Regional Sales Executive serving the U.S. national market. My coil-line work covers Stefa systems, feeders, straighteners, material orientation and cut-to-length interfaces. Call me with your coil specifications, blank drawings, finish criteria, representative coated material and proposed discharge arrangement. I can work with Mac-Tech to help assess whether the STEFA LCS2 configuration fits your dimensional, edge-quality and painted-face requirements while supporting the next forming operation.
