Overview
Choose the Scottsdale KFS Framemaker 1220G3’s production route around your approved connection detail and panel-versus-component workload. It forms members, not assembled panels. Switching modes requires no tooling change, but that does not eliminate the need for appropriate coils.
- Panelizer Mode makes matching stud and track members from the same nominal lipped C-section and coil width. Section or material changes can still require another coil. Its locally lip-cut C-track is not conventional U-track; have the project engineer evaluate an alternative C-to-C connection before changing an approved U-track detail.
- Hybrid Mode produces lipped C-studs and unlipped U-track in separate batches from their respective coil widths, for component orders or later panel assembly.
- Check capacity against actual base-metal thickness, yield strength, geometry and tooling together. The published 0.84–2.70 mm thickness envelope narrows to 0.84–1.50 mm at 80 ksi yield strength.
- Ask for output comparisons using representative member recipes and batch sizes. Include assembly capacity for panel work, or separate stud/track runs and coil-change time for components. Strip speed alone does not demonstrate finished-panel output.
The Scottsdale KFS Framemaker 1220G3 can produce both single-coil panelizing members and conventional studs and U-track, giving framing fabricators two production routes on one roll former. The modes differ in connection geometry, coil requirements and production sequence; the appropriate route follows the approved framing detail and the order mix.
The 1220G3 joined Scottsdale’s multi-profile lineup in an announcement dated August 28, 2026. Industry coverage followed on September 9, and a September 23 explanation detailed its two production modes. For U.S. framing fabricators, the addition provides a new machine option for combining project-based panel work with component orders.
Member forming with inline fabrication
A separate decoiler feeds slit steel strip through successive roller stands. Inline punches and special tools prepare member features, and a hydraulic exit shear cuts finished lengths. The roll former makes members, not assembled wall panels.
The 1220G3 uses servo-controlled depth adjustment for profile-size positioning within its qualified range. Lip cutting, stud-end swaging and stud/track dimpling provide connection preparation, while inkjet labeling identifies members. These functions combine section forming with the features required by the selected fabrication method during a programmed run.
Panelizer Mode uses matching C-sections
Panelizer Mode forms corresponding studs and track from the same nominal lipped C-section and coil width. Lip cuts remove return-lip material at stud intersections; swaging reduces the incoming stud end so it can nest inside the track. The track retains its lips between intersections.
Matching member pairs can run in panel assembly order without a stud-to-track coil change. A different section or material specification can still require another coil. This route suits project-based panel fabrication, but single-coil production is a section-level benefit, not a promise of a coil-change-free project.
The resulting locally lip-cut C-track is not conventional U-track. If an approved detail requires U-track, have the project engineer evaluate an alternative C-to-C connection before changing the production method.
Hybrid Mode supplies conventional studs and track
Hybrid Mode produces lipped C-studs and unlipped U-track in separate batches from their respective coil widths. The members can ship as components or be assembled into panels later, making this route relevant to component suppliers and panel work using conventional stud-and-track geometry.
Switching between the two modes does not require a tooling change, but Hybrid Mode still requires the appropriate stud and track coils. For a mixed order book, compare the panel-to-component workload and the frequency of profile, thickness and grade changes. Servo positioning does not change the coil on the decoiler.
Match capacity to actual coil specifications
The 1220G3’s published envelope covers 0.84–2.70 mm thickness, 89–305 mm web depth and 41–89 mm flange width. Thickness, yield strength, geometry and tooling must be evaluated together. At 80 ksi yield strength, the published thickness range is 0.84–1.50 mm—not the full 2.70 mm maximum.
Actual base-metal thickness is more useful than a reference gauge label when comparing framing requirements. Framing products have separate base-steel thickness, manufacturing-tolerance and identification requirements under AISI S240-20. Tabulated values in the SSMA technical guide depend on defined geometry, strength and punchout assumptions. Machine adjustability alone does not establish that a member or connection satisfies a project.
Compare output on a member recipe
Uninterrupted forming speed excludes fabrication stops. Effective output depends on member length, material, geometry, and the number and sequence of punching, notching, swaging, dimpling and cutting operations.
Ask for a production comparison using representative member recipes and batch sizes. For panel work, include assembly capacity; strip speed alone cannot demonstrate finished-panel output. For component orders, include separate stud and track runs and coil-change time. Treat published rates as specifications, not demonstrated performance for your order mix.
Discuss forming-system fit with Patrick O’Neill
I’m Patrick O’Neill, Mac-Tech’s National Product Manager / Regional Sales Executive serving fabrication teams across the United States. Call me with representative profile and approved connection drawings, base-metal thickness, yield strength and coating specifications, plus typical member lengths, batch sizes and your panel-versus-component order mix. Through Mac-Tech, I can help assess how geometry, tooling, production recipes and operator requirements affect forming-system fit, and identify where manufacturer confirmation or project-engineer review is needed.
